Almost Famous
First Day at Work…
Today was my first day working for Time Out Hong Kong. My morning didn’t start off too well. When I arrived @ the building, I realized I had forgotten which floor the office was actually on; I ended up riding the elevator from the 10th to the 18th floor, hitting every stop on the way up.
When I finally found the floor, everything was cool, though. My editor wasn’t worried about my tardiness at all, and he walked me around to each computer in the newsroom and introduced me to all the writers for the magazine.
The writers at Time Out HK are pretty much the hippest of the hip: everyone is really young, and they come from every corner of the globe. I had great conversations everyone, and many in the office were pecking at my musical interests for a long while. Also, I was invited out by a Nightlife section writer (a hottie from SoCal), which was glorious, but could be dangerous considering most weeks I’m partying Wednesday - Sunday.
And, The Best Part of the Day….
I was given a 2 page feature assignment on my first day!
Whaaat?!?!
I was a bit nervous, I must admit. Of course, I had to stay confident, and play it cool when I was asked to write the piece, though. For the assignment, I’ll get to interview a handful of Grammy and Juno Award winners! Shit yeah! I figure I’ll just stick to the basics: find good conversation, dig for good quotes, and of course, just let the story write itself.
“Pull the trigger, Nuñez!”
I’ll never forget Scott Swafford yelling this at me when I was working on my biggest feature to date. I spent weeks collecting facts for the piece, and once it came time to start writing, I froze, as I was scared to leave any good details out. (That story, by the way, was only 800 words. My newest assignment will be 2000 words.)
Occasionally, I must admit, I do have trouble pulling the trigger: rolling out of bed most mornings, getting started on homework, getting to class on time….
For this assignment, however, I couldn’t be more eager to get started. I’m extremely thankful for my experiance with Scott, and I feel prepared and very verrry anxious to start this set of interviews.
My life is a Dream…
Over the past few months and especially during the past few weeks, life has been outstanding. I’m not sure what I did to deserve any of this, but I can definately say I’m loving every minute of it.
I don’t think I’m missing anything at this point.
I’m starting to think this is all too good to be true. Rock & Roll is all around me. Haven’t I seen this life somewhere before? Oh yeah….
